Reunion Updates

Hi everyone! I'm just so happy to share with you all that one of our ADZ-PC batch '88 coming from the Ilo-Ilo, Philippines will most definitely be able to join us on Sept 26-28, 2008. Pearlie Domingo --- Pearl, thank you so much for your effort and willingness to celebrate with us. I know this is really BIG. I, personally, am so excited to see you. Will plan more when I get there next month. I might not be able to go to Ilo-Ilo but you are most welcome to call me or even better, to join us in Zamboanga too for our get-together.

RVM AND JESUIT

It is a wonder that even during the time of the foundress of the Congregation of the Religious of the Virgin Mary (RVM- Mother Ignacia del Espiritu Santo), the essence of the link between the Ateneo and Pilar College already existed. Below is a story cut short of what I mean.

When Ignacia was 21 years old, her parents wanted her to marry. Heeding a call deep within but not wanting to disappoint her parents, Ignacia sought counsel from Fr. Paul Klein, a "Jesuit priest" from Bohemia who arrived in Manila in 1682. The priest gave her the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. After this period of solitude and prayer, "Ignacia was inspired by God to remain in the service of the Divine Majesty and she resolved to live by the sweat of her face.” She left home and brought with her only a needle and a pair of scissors. She started to live alone in the house located at the back of the Jesuit College of Manila. Her life of prayer and labor attracted yndias who also felt called to the religious life but could not be admitted into the existing congregation at that time. M. Ignacia accepted these women into her company and the first community was born. They became known as the "Beatas de la Compania de Jesus" because they frequently received the sacraments at the Church of "St. Ignatius" , performed many acts of devotion there and had the Jesuit fathers for their spiritual directors and confessors.

SEALS OF PILAR COLLEGE AND ATENEO

Hello to all! 12 years in Pilar College and I never even bothered to go into the details of the meaning of our seal. But it's never too late....Hope the Pilarists who, like me, are so oblivious of the essence of our seal, will be freed from the lack of knowledge of the latter through this insert. Thanks to Edcel Acuna for tickling my curiosity on this matter

The Pilar College Seal

The monogram AM stands for Ave Maria or "Hail Mary," the angelic salutation which is an ejaculatory praise to Mary, the Mother of God, Mother and Patroness of the Congregation. The twelve stars refer to the stars in the vision of St. John, in which "a great sign appeared in Heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars." These stars represent the twelve extraordinary graces or privileges which God has bestowed on Mary.
The rays radiating from the monogram signify the outpouring of graces which come to us through the hands of Mary from Jesus. This again is a symbolization of the Congregation's motto, To Jesus through Mary.
Etched below the monogram is a very significant figure of an open book upon which is inscribed the revealed word of God: Initium sapientiae timor Domini, the English translation of which is: "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom."
This is the real essence of the education the Congregation is intent on imparting — a filial fear of the Lord, a knowledge of the Lord, Who in truth is the beginning of wisdom, for wisdom here means the knowledge, the grasping, the understanding of truth. And, if because of human frailty one fails to grasp the full meaning of such tremendous truth, at least, the study of the science of God, the study of Religion aside from all others sciences, is the beginning of wisdom.
Immediately below the book is the white sampaguita flower, the national flower of the Philippines. It stands for the Congregation of the Religious of the Virgin Mary, the first Filipino congregation founded by a Filipina,
Mother Ignacia del Espiritu Santo.

The Ateneo de Zamboanga University Seal

The Ateneo de Zamboanga University seal reflects the mission of the school

Surrounding the upper half of the seal is the school motto:
"PRO DEO ET PATRIA" -- IN THE SERVICE OF GOD AND COUNTRY. The school's mission is to produce men and women for others, men and women for the service of God and country.

And on the bottom, surrounding the seal, is the name of the school, the ATENEO DE ZAMBOANGA which was founded in 1912.

In the circular field is the shield. The red and yellow stripes are derived from the coat of arms of the family of Oñaz, the maternal line of St. Ignatius. In the center are two wolves and a food pot. These are of the medallion of the family of Loyola, the Paternal Line of St. Ignatius of Loyola. This medallion stands for the generosity for which the house of Loyola was well known. The cross on the upper right portion of the shield symbolizes the Christian character of the Ateneo. While the vinta indicates the various cultural communities of the South Western Philippines where the school is located

On th bottom left are the book and torch, traditional symbols of education.

Above the shield is the glorious sunburst, the monogram of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) -- IHS surmounted by the cross and below are three nails. The "IHS" are the first letters of the name of Jesus in Greek. Emanating from the name of Jesus are the Blue and white rays that signify his gifts and grace for all.

ATENEO-PILAR BATCH 88 GRAND REUNION UPDATE

Hi there to all! How's the week treating you? Hope all is good and well with everyone. This message is most particular to two very good friends of mine in Zamboanga. I hope you both are coping well. Praying that you and your families are showered with good health, wellness, happiness and love.

Please do not forget to wear a mask befitting your exquisite cocktail wear. Let it be one that can really entice the keenest of pleasure in elegance, grace and flawlessness....
Let us enliven our reminiscing through the sheer poetry of our friendship, camaraderie, poise and decorum. And most importantly, let us give life to our reunion by enjoying to the fullest our three days with our friends in Las Vegas. Let there be no afflict marring the ambience of our affair. Ok sure, I sound like someone imposing so much but you must admit, we are all attending this Grand Reunion for the sole purpose of being reunited with our friends from bygone days. Then that statement re:"afflict" is just to reaffirm our intention. Yikes!!!Did I just make us sound like "too old?"(by using bygone days-hehe) LOL sorry for that.

Moving on...
On our first night in LAS VEGAS, we are requesting you to come and register with us at the RIO ALL SUITES HOTEL & CASINO. As we come close to the affair, we will be able to give you specifics regarding the area where we will be. I am also requesting that everyone, esp alumnae of Ateneo and Pilar, to wear BLUE (any shades except for dark blue or mdnight blue). This is in deference to the common color of our school uniforms and the values it represented then and now. And it is also for the purpose of having uniformity for our picture taking of you, solo.

Antonette Orendain-Poole is our attendance authority. She will be joining me, Alf and Barb in the Bienvenue team. Glad to have our "beadle of the year" grace us with her forte once again.

Our 2nd Night, I don't want to impose more from anyone but it would be nice to have a rugged to casual dinner/karaoke with everyone. I am suggesting the CATHAY HOUSE along 5300 Mountain RD., Las Vegas, NV 89146. Like I mentioned before menu options start at $18++.Cathay House Dim Sum Restaurant This hyperlink will take you to the different options that they have. Please find time to review them and tell us what you think. Personally I can really say that their food there is pretty good and that it is one of my "thumbs up" restaurant in Las Vegas.

Room Capacities:Main Dining Room - 120Second Dining Room - 100Small Banquet Room - 40-50Large Banquet Room - Up to 150Banquet Facilities: karaoke system, microphone, big screen TV, CD players, professional sound systemsDance Floor: Rental and delivery availableAll facilities supplied at no extra charge.

If we do this, we are not looking into so much additional cost. It is just about $23 more
and we get to enjoy two nights of good food with good friends.

Please be advised that as we get closer to our Grand reunion, we are expecting to get more ideas from
more people and we will be polishing our activities more and more. But don't be disheartened, despite
all the tweaking and stuff, our first consideration is not to increase the cost further. Actually, this $23
for CATHAY HOUSE is the last I'll ask from everyone to consider as being an official activity of our
reunion. I mean, we will be going to Las Vegas for our reunion and what better way to celebrate it than
being with those whom we set out to have fun with, right?Let us make use of the blog that Alfred created. http://masquerade2008.blogspot.com/
Let me hear your voice. uuuummmm, Let me put it this way, if I won't hear from anyone via
email, txt or phone call before the mid of May, I'll take it as the answer to the 2nd night
is a "GO."
This should stir us a bit huh?!? hehe. Sorry if you think I'm being so callous about this. Really, I'm not.
Its quite the opposite actually. My passion to this is soft-natured and that is why, I'd love to see everyone
take pleasure in knowing that you experienced what you came out to Las Vegas for.
I guess I have said enough for one night... So let me present you with an updated list of attendees
which, BTW, I thought would not improve in number anymore...hehe
